The highlights

  • Sharp early apples, sweet later (dual)
  • Award winner, renowned for its juiciness
  • Makes great pies and crumbles
  • Harvest in September

Description

  • A great tasting dual purpose apple that's easy to grow
  • James Grieve apples are green with red streaks and juicy, cream coloured flesh
  • In early September the apples have a perfect sharpness for cooking and hold their shape well. Leave them on the tree and they'll sweeten later in the month - perfect for eating fresh!
  • The pink blossom is very resistant to frost, meaning that you won't lose your crop to a late cold snap
  • Extremely reliable and a heavy cropper, earning the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • A compact tree that's ideal for small to medium gardens and even containers
  • Partially self-fertile - Pollination Group 3. Does not require pollination by another apple but will produce better crops if one is nearby. They need to flower at the same time. Apples in the same pollination group, or one on either side, can pollinate each other. In built-up areas it is unlikely that there won't be a suitable pollination partner within a mileMORE
  • Cordon trained - Max size H2m x W1m (Perfect for growing in a pot, on a patio or in a smaller garden)
  • M26 Rootstock - Max size H3m x W3m
  • MM106 Rootstock - Max size H4m x W4m. Rootstocks restrict the size of a tree to make it more suited for an average gardenMORE
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single-use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post.MORE
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better-shaped tree. This can stop the tree from becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

What to expect

Supplied as

8L Eco Pot
This tree is supplied in a 8L Eco-Pot, which is approx W15 x H30cm. Eco Pots use 70% less plastic then traditional pots and can be recycled easily. A 8L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.

Height on arrival

120-150cm inc. pot

Eventual height

2m

Eventual spread

4m
This variety is available on dwarfing rootstocks, the eventual spread of this tree will be between 3 and 4 metresMORE

Tasting notes

Starts of sharp, mellows to a sweeter, softer apple renowned for juiciness

Time to first crop

1 year
You may see your first apples the first year after planting, but don't expect substantial crops until the 3/4th year. Some advise thinning the fruit in the first few years so that the tree can concentrate its energy on establishing strong roots and growing.

Flower colour

Pink

Habit

Bushy

Hardiness

Fully Hardy
Doesn't require any protection from frost

Self fertile

Not self fertile
Requires a pollination partner to produce fruit. In most built up areas, it is unlikely there will not be a suitable tree close enough to pollinate, but in rural areas you should consider making sure there is another tree in the same pollination group within a mile.

Uses

Eating and juices

Rootstock

Cordon rootstock (grows up to 2m)
Our cordon apple trees are grown on dwarfing rootstock and then trained to grow in a cordon shape. This is done by carrying out formative pruning when the tree is young to make the tree send out loads of small side branches. The result, a super compact, yet productive tree which you can grow in the smallest of spaces.

How to grow

Water in well when planting - read on for ongoing care

Water in well when planting - read on for ongoing care

Water in thoroughly when planting. For bare root trees, you won't need to water regularly going forward, only water in dry spells when needed. You should be able tell because the leaves will start to wilt and droop. If a container grown tree, it will need more watering until its roots are established. It should be watered every other day or so for the first few months. Then reduce to twice a week until autumn. In the second year it should have a established enough root system to support itself, just water when required as explained above for bare roots. When watering a tree it is important to give a good soaking. It is better to water heavy and less frequently than little and often as this encourages the roots to grow down into the ground.

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.
